Gold Bug Quarry Young Scientists Open House: Pyritized Fossils & More


Come join us at the Gold Bug Quarry for our Open Houses and collect some of the most rare fossils in the United States! Our knowledgeable staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Don't miss out - reserve your spot today!


Price: $99 per person

Dates: Sunday, July 5th and Monday, July 6th 2022 

Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm


Age: Young scientists from ages 8 to 21. Visitors 8-14 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a caregiver. 


Availability: 20 visitors per day


What to expect: Explore this famous site for a day and learn about its history, scientific significance, and enjoy a few hours of personal collecting in the upper layers of the exposure. The quarry offers some of the best examples of basic geology and paleontology in North America. The upper layers of the quarry contain graptolites, cephalopods, brachiopods, and non-pyritized trilobites.  Visitors to the open house event can keep all fossils they find with the exception of pyritized trilobites and any fauna deemed scientifically valuable.  Visitors are limited to keeping 10 specimens per person.


What to bring: fossil collecting bag and/or aluminum foil, water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, closed-toe shoes. 


Equipment: For a $5 per-day fee, we'll have limited loaner equipment (picks, chisels, boxes) on a first-come, first served basis.
